The Securities and Exchange Commission announced on May 8, 2025, that a settlement agreement has been reached in the case involving Ripple Labs Inc., CEO Bradley Garlinghouse, and co-founder Christian Larsen, with SEC (. This agreement signed between the parties and the SEC establishes a framework for resolving the lawsuit filed in December 2020.

According to the agreement, the SEC and Ripple will jointly petition the court for the lifting of the injunction imposed on Ripple under the final decision dated August 7, 2024, and for the redistribution of the funds held in the account of the 125 million dollar penalty amount. According to this redistribution, only 50 million dollars will be paid to the SEC; the remaining amount will be returned to Ripple.

If the court expresses an opinion in this regard, the parties will make a limited remand request during the appeal process to send the case back to the district court. Subsequently, both SEC and Ripple will withdraw their appeals currently pending in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

The SEC stated that this agreement does not include an assessment of the validity of the lawsuit claims and was made solely to support its efforts to update and restructure its regulatory approach to the cryptocurrency market. It was also noted that this decision would not serve as a precedent for other similar cases.
